Asheron Blows Up!

Microsoft today announced that the "Twilights Gleaming" event is now underway in the dynamic world of Asheron's Call. Two towns on the once peaceful Isle have been destroyed at the hands of an evil entity once thought to be vanquished. Unleashed magic forces reduced the towns of Arwic and Tufa to smoldering ash and a third town, Cragstone, has been badly damaged. New and veteran players alike are invited to take up arms against the evil that threatens the very existence of Dereth.

Festive summer months, marked by the gaiety of enjoying sumptuous chocolate foods and the beauty of shooting stars in the evening sky, have given way to upheaval and calamity in Dereth. Fiery skies illuminated by cascades of lightening and the eerie howl of wolf-packs off in the distance have broken the short-lived serenity on the Isle. Powerful forces unleashed calamity and evil, and demonic creatures descend upon the land. Smoke-filled craters, ravaged lands and unnerved survivors now replace once active town centers.

A fiery crater, burnt rubble, and a dead coware all that remain of the town of Arwic.

"Twilights Gleaming" brings a host of new elements to the game, such as an entirely new species of creatures, expanding Dereth's bestiary. New creatures include the spidery Grievver and strange Niffi flying squid. Players can also take advantage of new emotes that allow characters to pantomime curtsey and meditate, as well the ability to be "afk" (away from keyboard). Secure trade, a new in-game tool, allows players to trade items between one another without the threat of theft. Additionally, players now have the ability to customize their armour and clothing, dyeing it to match other members of their allegiance.

Heh. Reminds me of when we had Armageddon on our MUD (www.iconoclast.org). We picked the places all the players used to congregate and we set huge fires there that would kill them when they walked into the room. Then we tripled the number of aggressive mobs wandering around and started sniping people randomly. Half the players loved it. Half the players hated it. But it was fun nevertheless. If there's one way to breathe new life into a world, it's to destroy it.

Aah, Asheron's Call. Do people still do that mass monster murder thing? I briefly played a couple of today's popular MMORPGs, or rather MMOGS, in the chaotic and bleak-looking couple of months after the very Armageddon Aeon speaks of, but I never saw the attraction. Whatever the sociable and/or intelligent populace, I couldn't find them among the hordes of d00dz and monster/player mass murderers. Plus, fantasy never really was my cup of tea.

Well if fantasy isn't your cup of tea, not much I can do to change your mind but while there is certainly a lot of d00dz in any of these games I've also found a lot of fun and mature people that I have a great time with. Even when I got sick of UO the game, the people I played with kept me coming back and now my wife plays AC too so I'm stuck with it! Heh heh. Anyway to each their own. BTW later tonight we're adding a picture of the crater that was once a town. :)

Even if fantasy isn't your thing, asheron's call can still be. I actually received my copy of AC in the mail fron Intel, I won some contest or something.. I'm not into RPG or fantasy, and it looked pretty stupid, but I thought I would install it and try it out rather than throw out a 50 dollar bill handed to me. I have been mesmerized for almost a year, and due to major life changes I am still only level 23 but I hope to get much better soon. I only wish microsoft could show the true fun of AC for free, but you have to see it to beleive it. AC rules! And nixje, there aren't too many d00dz..

hey, you guys have a great sense for fantasy and all that cool
stuff, but whatever makes you happy. I'm lookin' for articles
on cannibalism, so I don't know why it recommended this sight
but thats all good.

Um... ok.
