Tabletop Gaming

Hunkered down behind a handful of dice or stack of manuals? Itching to tap, flip, crank, roll, save, or measure? Discuss paper, board, card, and war gaming here.

At long last, the book I have been working on with Jerry Grayson for the past 18 months is complete.

I have introduced quite a few people to gaming. I explain what PnPRPGs are and how the work, always try to have newbies observe a healthy group in action before throwing them in, and coach them one-on-one through the character creation process. And to date this has worked pretty well, new gamers come in with a grasp of what is going on around them, a foundational understanding of the rules, the conventions of the genre, and the expectations of the social contract.

With particular reference to D&D, but probably applies to other systems as well.

Something I come across with depressing regularity when trawling various gaming forums is the concept of a 'party build' being discussed.

So, house rules and alternate ways of doing things are some of my favorite things in a game. As all of my players know, I tend to use a lot of alternate rules in my games cause I don't like the original rules quite as much. So, here I'm exploring all available options. What I'm asking is that all those who wish to do so (I will too) just post the house rules you use in your games, along with what system the rule applies to, and, if you feel like it, what original rule it replaces and changes. I'm always interested in new ways of doing things and look forward to your ideas/rules!

Multiclassing is something that's been around, in one form or another, throughout D&D's entire lifetime. It appears to be getting a pretty drastic revision for the new edition, and I'm creating this forum in order discuss the various merits and flaws of the new approach, as well as to serve as a place to consolidate all of the speculation on 4th Edition, rather than waiting for Gazgurk to break it out in some other area ;).

I mad this thread for people to share their stories of times when they made an embarassing mistake in an RPG, everyone's done it at least once!

Heres's mine.

So I was DMing these group of players, good gang of dudes, but these were the

This is a call for help.
I want to introduce my half-brother (8) and -sister (10) to Role Playing. However, I'm not sure how to go about it.

I've been thinking of setting up a short system-less (or using an extremely simple homebrew system) session of fantasy adventure, but I'm not sure what would make a good introductory story/adventure.

I DM this player who is obsessed with dragons (Half-dragon dragon shamen).
As the DM, I'm automatically the ultimate authority on everything.
And all of a sudden he asks me "What happens if I breed with a true dragon?"

I've just returned home from a Friday-night gaming session, and I'm too frustrated with myself to sleep. I've hunted around Gamegrene and other roleplaying websites, and I have yet to find a good discussion on the topic of character ruts, so here I am.

Otherwise known as my Rant Thread, to be used when I'm in need of getting stuff off my chest.

When a games session that you've refereed goes well, it leaves you with a warm, fuzzy glow of accomplishment and a sense that you've enriched the lives of a few friends for a few hours with your efforts. Efforts is the operative word because it is hard work, both creatively when you are preparing material for the forthcoming session, and in terms of handling the players. Non-linear adventures, where the players have free reign to determine how they will interact with the scenario rather than being railroaded along a specific path, are the hardest to deal with but also the most rewarding.
