Tabletop Gaming

Hunkered down behind a handful of dice or stack of manuals? Itching to tap, flip, crank, roll, save, or measure? Discuss paper, board, card, and war gaming here.

First off - hey. I came to this website, interested in the idea that there were people out there that might be obliged to review homebrew content. I now realize that that is not the only reason for this site's existence - and I'm unsure if the site was created for the 'review homebrew' content thing to begin with.

So, I know I always talk about this and am a little obsessed, but it's something that has been bouncing about in my head and I thought it'd be a good thing to throw to you guys. I'm currently running a gangster game, where the players are Irish gangsters in the 20s, and I want to impress the horrifying reality and the addictive adrenaline rush of violence upon them, to portray it realistically. This came up because we recently played through the first moment of real, rolling dice violence in the form of an assassination of a rival gang.

As long as we're all back here together, let's catch up on some of what makes our campaigns so great; those moments that can never be forgotten as long as we game. Recent is what I'm looking for… not pining for the days of our campaigns years ago.

Help. Here is my problem: Scaldcrow Games is offering a new generic starship book. Since its part of their generic series it is being targeted for any game. I like Sci-Fi ok, but I'm a bigger fan of fantasy, and I love Scaldcrow Fantasy. I've heard some rumors that they are going to be expanding into some other genres as well as fantasy. I'm gonna get their AAR5-"Advantage" because I love their stuff but I don't play sci-fi right now. What sci-fi core system does everybody recommend? I like a game that is pretty fast paced but is strong on story telling.

This is a forum thread in which we can discuss the potential of a game run over the Internet, either Skype or Play-By-Post, that was proposed in the comments of Morbus' "The End of my Tabletop Era" article (http://www.gamegrene.com/node/1244#comments). For lack of a better established name, I'll refer to this as the Dark Vigil game until we can come up with something better. I'll quote from the relevant comments there to facilitate discussion here.

Alright. I admit it. I love D&D. There's something magical about it that makes me like it. Maybe it's the fact that other than that, I've only bought Exalted (Which is fantastic), but I digress.

I've been a player for a few years, and a DM for even fewer. I've ran some campaigns that my groups have enjoyed, but I have not. The problem? Not enough immersion for my taste.

So, I've had a system idea bouncing about in my head for the last several months that I've decided to bring to you guys to see what you think of it. I've wanted to make a gaming system for running film noir (those old detective movies from the 40s, recently films such as The Black Dahlia and L.A. Confidential) for quite a while. I've a few ideas but nothing really complete.

Hey everyone, I've been playing RPG's since High School.. Well I have kids now and started playing the d&d 4e with them and they love it! so we play every weekend now.

Yes, Theo has returned from beyond the shadows to come back with a vengeance, and in my RP group we had experiences ranging from "Dungeon's Eleven" (first time I've ever done a bank heist in high fantasy) to "The marriage of Rogues & Liars" (sadly, not half as oriingal a story as the title, but ah well). Anyhow, long story short, I've been up to all sorts of zany hijinks, including (best sit down for this one)...

I recently switched a long-running (20 year) campaign to D&D 3.5 from 2nd edition and I've been enjoying many aspects of it. When learning the 3.5 rules I joined a completely different group and had a fun time playing through the "Rise of the Runelords" adventure path for Pathfinder. I really enjoyed the flavour of the modules (even though I couldn't believe how quickly we went from novices to experts). I decided to update the adventure to my tastes and make it suitable for a group of 24th Level Epic adventurers. Who knows they may even go up a couple of levels through it.
